Building on the success of two previous pop-ups in London this year, we’re excited to announce the launch of a third pop-up from 8th to 30th November, 2013 entitled ‘From Kenya w Love’. The boutique will be located in the heart of London’s West End and is a collaboration with FAFA, a body promoting the best of Kenya’s and Africa’s contemporary fashion designers.

“Our last two London pop-ups far exceeded our expectations. Not only did we get our online customers visiting from around London, but we had a fantastic reaction from passing footfall. Women walked in and shopped who’d spotted the vibrant and original prints and textiles fused with modern Western styling, and they loved the tribal jewellery,” says Sapelle.com’s CEO and Founder, Daphne Kasambala.

The pop-up showcases Kenya’s top labels, both ladies and menswear. Sapelle.com will also be featuring its Winter collection, including pieces from suppliers around Africa. Shoppers should expect to find a wide range of ethical tribal-inspired Fashion and Gifts for day and evening. The collaboration is part of a celebration of Kenya’s 50th Independence with charity partner Wherever The Need, who’ll be holding a gala dinner & cultural showcase called ‘Festival Kenya’ in London on 21st November, 2013.

Kasambala and FAFA’s Ann McCreath and Hebret Lakew, have worked together since the launch of Sapelle.com in 2012, and have wanted to collaborate on something like this. “We ‘re utterly thrilled by this chance, and have called the event ‘From Kenya with Love’ because, after the horrific terrorist attack at Westgate Mall, we want to highlight the positive, loving and hugely creative side of Kenya.

Kenya’s a country that loves its rich and vibrant culture, and one of the continent’s leaders in fashion. The opportunity to pop-up in the prestigious Monmouth Street is the perfect ending to the year, and a chance for shoppers to shop exclusively from labels not found anywhere else in the UK.” There is a schedule of events including a launch party, workshops, a Gentlemen’s shopping evening, late night shopping and a Press & Stylists cocktail event. Africa Fashion Week Dazzles London

A snapshot of the colourful display at the Sapellé stall

On 3rd and 4th August, the second annual Africa Fashion Week took place in London in the midst of Olympic fever. The temperamental weather did not hold back the expectant crowd, most of whom made a day (or two) of it, soaking up the festival atmosphere and mixing in viewings of the catwalk shows with shopping around the stalls.

Rows of beautiful garments adorned our space

Never one to be left out of the excitement, Sapellé was there in the mix, and doing it in style. We brought our online boutique out of the virtual world and into the physical realm, with a stall that featured some of our most popular garments and accessories that we’ve had on sapelle.com.  Our fans got to sample and shop pieces from our labels including Modahnik, Kooroo, Kutowa, YouMeWe, KikoRomeo, Tina Lobondi and Kamondi Couture, and our various accessories labels.

We got to introduce jewellery from our newest supplier, social enterprise Nakate

We had a perfect vantage point at the event, from where we met lovers of style from so many countries around the world, we eventually lost count.  At one point we wish we’d enlisted the services of a translator but we found good old-fashion signing worked well enough!

If there was any doubt that the renaissance of African fashion was happening, this event blew clear that out of the water. We were lucky enough to capture some of the beautiful outfits worn by the fashionistas we met at the event, some of which are shared here.

Sapellé furnished the event’s VIP area and previewed the upcoming interiors range

Sapellé also co-sponsored the event’s VIP area, taking the opportunity to preview our upcoming own-label soft furnishings range which we are so excited about that we’ve posted some sneak pictures of here (please email info@sapelle.com for more information about the Sapellé soft furnishings range, and any other questions).

Fifty designers and even more exhibitors from different sections of the fashion world came together to showcase their latest collections to an expectant audience of shoppers, bloggers, press and fashionistas all of whom had, it seems, waited long enough for an opportunity such as this, and had travelled from far and wide to sample the bold and the beautiful sights.

Our VIP lounge area showcased Sapellé products

The catwalk shows ran throughout the event on both days, and from our Sapellé stall we could regularly hear the catwalk audience break into excited applause, making us wish we could grab a seat at the show. But we did have a great time meeting and dressing our friends and fans, and spreading the word about Sapellé.

For those who did have a ring-side seat at the catwalk, fashion label Adebayo Jones, by consensus, was outstanding, with this season’s luxurious elegant gowns in metallic fabrics, and demonstrating the years of industry experience and talent behind this labe, and warranting the brand’s sterling reputation. Several other labels also shone on the catwalk, including Afro Fanatic, MMD Design, House of Adjeiwaah, House of Tayo and Lilly Alfonso. We’ll be keeping a look out for these brands.

Many of the Africa Fashion Week guests’ experience  was better than expected, and they’re clearly after more soon, and we’re already excited about the next installation which we hope will feature a broad range of designers and exhibitors from around Africa.
